FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS

What is an MRI and how is it different from a CT Scan?

An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a test that uses powerful magnets and radio waves to create detailed pictures of areas inside your body. A CT (Computed Tomography) scan uses x-ray technology to view these areas whereas an MRI does not use radiation. MRI’s are typically better for viewing soft tissues and joints.

How long does an MRI take?

Your MRI can take as little as 15 minutes or as long as an hour depending on the area that needs to be scanned and how many scans you have ordered. We ask that you lie as still as you possibly can to maximize the quality of the image and to increase the speed of the exam completion.

What if I have claustrophobia?

We have an “open” MRI machine for our patients that experience claustrophobia. This means that the magnets are placed at the top and bottom of the scanner, (with a larger opening) for a less “enclosed” feeling. This typically makes patients more comfortable and decreases anxiety.

What do I need to prepare for an MRI scan and what can I expect on the day of my exam?

Typically, there is no special preparation needed for an MRI. You can take all of your regularly scheduled medications and eat normally on the day of your exam unless otherwise specified by your doctor. Upon your arrival, our friendly staff will ask for a copy of your photo ID prior to filling out pre-registration paperwork. We have a safe available for any valuable items that you may want to keep in storage. Our certified MRI technicians will then review screening information with you and ask you to remove any metallic items (including jewelry, hair clips, etc.) and direct you to change into a gown if necessary. You will then be asked to lie on your back on the table and repositioned for your comfort prior to the exam. We also provide ear plugs as MRI’s can be noisy. After the exam, we will provide you with a CD copy to take back to your chiropractor/doctor. We will send the report to your chiropractor or doctor within 24-48 hours of being seen.

What do I need to do to schedule an MRI?

Please contact your chiropractor, doctor or nurse practitioner to ask for an MRI referral. We must have a referral to perform your scan. After you have seen your doctor or chiropractor and obtained a referral, they will typically fax or email a copy of your prescription and insurance information to us. From there, our staff will contact you via telephone or text to schedule an appointment.

What if I don’t have transportation to get to your facility?

No worries! We will order an Uber or Lyft to pick you up and drop you off at your desired destination. Our staff will ask you about transportation arrangements during the appointment process.
